Pavement Area Checks (Pavement and Shoulders)
- Alignment Geometry Checks - Check alignment for Deflection Angles and Start and End Coordinate Locations. Check Element Level Geometry for HALs and VALs.
- Check all pavement slopes against the design
- Check “surface smoothness using the IRI Tools” - if the surfaces don’t have good IRI values then the machines wont make them better
- Check all Surface Joint Areas - where Templates Change, Where Ramps, Sideroads and Driveways meet the main line etc. Check for steps or gaps and correct as necessary
- Check all pavement widths and pay close attention to width change locations. It is helpful to have PDF files loaded in background as an additional check here. Check that width change locations are captured as section drop locations in the surface model.
- Check all superelevation locations to ensure that slope changes are starting and ending in the correct locations. Check that superelevation locations are captured as secrion drop locations in the surface model.
- If checking using Template Editor, it often helps to load the Stored Sections (Geopak XSR files) in background to validate that at the Design Sections the Templates match for slope, elevation and width etc.
- Generate the contours at a suitable interval e.g. 0.25’ and validate the contour patterns for Pooling or for “irregular / zig zag shapes” as these will highlight potential areas of concern. Check contours against design contours if available.
- Check the surface in the 3D view and look for Shadow Issues on the triangles that can often highlight potential problems
- Check longitudinal profiles at Lane Edges by creating linework and draping it on the final surface and reviewing the profiles in the profile editor. Exaggerate the profile to exaggerate any potential steps or surface problems.
- Check and rectify surface flags caused by crossing breaklines or linear features (like walls) that lie on top of each other.
- Turn on the slope arrows for the surface model and check all the slope directions and patterns as these can also highlight potential problem areas.
Checking in this area can be carried out using the Template or Cross Section Editor, using the Surface Slicer Tool, using the IRI calculator tool, and using the Explore Object Tool as well as other tools
