Command Description
The RPS Rotate View command provides the controls required to rotate and reset the selected plan view using simple rotation controls derived from user inputs, selected line or alignment or selected text object etc. The view can be quickly rotated to maximize the use of your computer screen width or height and viewing orientation. The command is especially useful when working with long linear projects or with skewed site plans
Command Interface Description
The Rotate View command dialog looks as follows
Select View:
Because a project can have multiple plan views, select the Plan View that you wish to rotate from the pull down selection list. If you only have one plan view it will be the one that is currently selected in the selector.
Direction:
Select the rotation axis that you want to use. The options are
Right - Uses the horizontal axis of your screen as the reference axis for the screen rotation. i.e. when you select a line segment or text item for the screen rotation it will be rotated so that it is parallel to the horizontal axis of your screen. This is the most common use case for screen rotation so that you can maximize the width of the screen, or make text on rotated drawings easier to read for the user.
Up - Uses the vertical axis of your screen as the reference axis for the screen rotation. i.e. when you select a line segment or text item for the screen rotation it will be rotated so that it is parallel to the vertical axis of your screen.
Rotation Mode:
Select the rotation method that you want to use to orientate the rotated view. The options are
Free - Select a location and free pick a rotation angle to rotate the view. You can select two points or for the orientation you can snap the end of a line segment using Shift + Click to determine the angle of the line at that end of the segment (note that which end you select will dictate the “Up” direction after the plan rotation is applied. In this mode, when you have selected an angle, press the Enter key or click Apply to execute the plan view rotation.
Re-center to anchor location checkbox:
When checked, the plan view will be auto re-centered on the anchor location point as the view is rotated. The anchor location point is the first location clicked in the angle mode, the station point clicked with 0 offset in the reference line mode, and the text insertion point in the text mode.
Reference Line - Select a line or alignment to use as the reference. In this mode you can select a station along the line which will derive the instantaneous bearing of the line at that location and rotate the view so that that part of the line is orientated Left to Right across the screen. Note: If the line has its start point at the western end of the line and its end at the eastern end of the line, after the rotation the line will increase in station from Left to Right along the line. If the line has its start point at the Eastern End of the line and its end point at the Western End of the line, after rotation the line will increase in station from Right to Left. You can repeatedly click different stations along the same line to repeatedly realign the drawing with the selected axis of the screen. In this mode, as soon as you click a station the rotation of the plan view is instantly applied.
Text - Select a rotated text object and the view will be rotated to make the text align with the selected axis of the screen (vertical or horizontal). The normal use case for this is to use the left to right axis (horizontal axis) so that the text is easily readable for the user. In this mode, as soon as you click a text item, the plan view rotation is applied.
Show line direction checkbox:
When the Reference line method is selected, the show line direction checkbox is enabled so that you can display the RPS show line direction indicators (start and end of line flags and line direction indicators).
Reset:
To reset the selected plan view to it’s normal North Up orientation, click the Reset button.
Apply
When you tap apply, the selected plan view will be rotated and the command will ready itself for another view or orientation selection and repeat process execution. If you do not want to make a second selection and repeat the process tap Close to finish the process.
Close
Closes the command without further execution.
Use Case Notes
When the screen rotation is in use, the window selection methods work parallel to the axes of your screen i.e. the rotated view i.e. they are still boxes with left to right and down to up axes.
When the screen rotation is in use, the input of coordinates like @50,@50 still apply to the North and East directions as normal. In a view rotated by 45 degrees, an @50,@50 coordinate entry will result in a point 50’ North and 50’ East of the reference location and will create a point vertically above the reference point in the rotated view.
We recommend that you move the object (text item, line segment, free point rotation center) to the center of the screen or use the re-center to ancho location checkbox prior to executing the plan view rotation, you will find this less disorientating as a user.
