Last Updated

August 2022 - Command was updated to allow an expansion to the clipping area parallel to the two selected lines, allowing the e.g. cropped contours to be clipped back from the edge of pavement and back of curb lines.

Command Description

Provides the ability to crop selected lines either side of a selected line or to remove the segments of selected lines between a pair of lines. This is useful to remove e.g. Contour lines from pavement areas or around curb and gutter sections, where more precise modeling techniques are being used.

Command Interface Description

The Crop Crossing Lines command dialog looks as follows

Crop area defined by:
The crop crossing lines command has two modes of operation. Select the radio button next to the option that you wish to use.

  • Single line with offsets - In this mode you will select a single line and then define two offset values that define a "corridor" around the line (typically left and right of the source line but can also be two offsets to the left or right of the line if necessary). You will then select the lines that you wish to crop within the defined corridor.
  • Area between 2 lines - In this mode you will select two lines that create a corridor. You will then select the lines that you wish to crop within the defined corridor.

Single line with offsets mode

Select line:
Select the source line that will be the baseline for the offsets that you define next.

Offset 1:
Input the first offset value. Positive is to the right, negative is to the left. Note both Offset 1 and Offset 2 can be positive or negative if you wish to create the corridor to one side of the line or the other. If you want the corridor to span the source line then enter values like -1 and 1 for offset 1 and 2. If you want the corridor to the right of the line enter values like 1 and 4 for offset 1 and 2.

Offset 2:
Input the first offset value. Positive is to the right, negative is to the left.

Note, both Offset 1 and Offset 2 can be positive or negative if you wish to create the corridor to one side of the line or the other. If you want the corridor to span the source line then enter values like -1 and 1 for offset 1 and 2. If you want the corridor to the right of the line enter values like 1 and 4 for offset 1 and 2.

Mirror offsets:
If you click on this button, the offsets entered will be reversed - i.e. if you have an offset of 1.5’ to the Right and -3’ to the left, clicking this button will switch these to -1.5’ to the left and 3.0’ to the right.

Area between 2 lines mode

First Line:
Select the first line of two that defines one side of the crop corridor.

Second Line:
Select the second line of two to define the second side of the crop corridor.

Note: You can show the direction of the selected lines by clicking on the show line direction toggle at the end of the line selector controls. The arrow colors, size and transparency are controlled using the RPS Settings for Show Direction.

Start / Stop location

You can elect to crop crossing lines over the entire length of the source line(s) or just a portion of the source line(s) by defining a Start and Stop location here. If you select the entire line option, the start and stop location selectors are grayed out and are not usable. If you select the Portion option the Start and Stop location fields are enabled and you can simply select the option and then graphically select the locations required.

Boundary Settings

Expand clipping area along the line(s) checkbox:
Check this checkbox if you wish to expand the clipping area laterally to increase the width of the clipping area to the left / right of the area defined between two lines or around a single line. Enter the value of the additional expansion area e.g. 0.05’.

Expand clipping area on the ends checkbox:
Check this checkbox if you wish to expand the clipping area beyond the start and end of the selected lines. Enter the value of the additional expansion area e.g. 0.1’. This has been added to assist with cross section takeoff workflows where sections are defined in a multicolumn grid and you need to clip out grid lines between columns e.g. horizontal grid lines at the top and bottom of a section grid column which fall at exactly the ends of the selected pair of lines (in two line mode).

Shade clipping area checkbox:
The crop area of the corridor defined by the source line(s), associated offsets and start and stop locations will now be highlighted as a yellow crop area on screen if you enable this checkbox

Lines to crop:
Select the lines that you wish to crop within the defined cropping area. You can use the Options button to select by Layer, by Elevation, by polygon etc. This now remembers and updates the selection after a command execution to update the objects to be cropped on the next execution (because an execution of the command breaks the existing lines and creates new objects that have to be added to the prior selection).

Click the remember selection checkbox to retain and update selections between each application of the command.

Apply
When you tap apply, the crossing lines will be cropped and the command will ready itself for another selection set and repeat process execution. If you do not want to make a second selection and repeat the process tap Cancel to finish the process. The command returns the focus to the next line or next pair of lines to select, making it faster and easier to run the command.

OK
Executes the command and closes on completion

Close
Closes the command without further execution.

Use Case Videos

The following videos show the use of the Crop Crossing Lines command in a work process context

This is an update that covers using the Sept 1 2020 update for cleaning up contours around flow lines, and how to use the Mirror Offsets function and also the remembering of the selection set (and updating that in line with those objects affected by the prior execution of the command). The looping of the command is now better also.

This is an update that covers using the Sept 1 2020 update for cleaning up double column cross sections. We made a change that allows you to extend the area affected by the crop crossing to catch the top and bottom grid lines when clipping out the grids between the two columns of data.
